Martin Shaw is a British actor. He was born on 21 January 1945 in Birmingham, England.

He made his television debut as Egan in an episode of The Newcomers (1967) and has since had many roles over the years, his most prominent being, as Doyle in The Professionals (1977-83), as the title character on Judge John Deed (2001-07) and as the title character on Inspector George Gently (2007-17). He's also narrated on audiobooks, including The Hobbit and Wuthering Heights and has hosted documentaries, including Martin Shaw: Aviators and Dambusters Declassified. He has performed on the stage, which includes as Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire (1974), as The Older Elvis Presley in Are You Lonesome Tonight? (1985) and as Lord Goring in An Ideal Husband (1992). Some of his other acting work includes:-

  • Coronation Street (1967-68)

  • Macbeth (1971)

  • The New Avengers (1977)

  • Always and Everyone (1999-2002)
