Wells' career spanned over a decade, during which he competed in numerous international competitions and set several records. He first gained international recognition at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Canada, where he won gold medals in both the 100m and 200m events. He followed this up with a gold medal in the 100m event at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, becoming the first British athlete to win an Olympic sprint title since 1924.
